The word collectible has so many meanings to different people. When I started learning about coins in my boomer years I realized that I was not a true, die hard collector. I love learning and looking at coins. I enjoy looking at collections but I really enjoy watching coins sell. So, what does that make me? Perhaps a collector/invester/appreciator of coins?
Wikipedia had the following definition of a collectible:
A collectable or collectible (aka collector’s item) is any object regarded as being of value or interest to a collector (not necessarily monetarily valuable or antique). There are numerous types of collectables and terms to denote those types. An antique is a collectable that is old. A curio is a small, usually fascinating or unusual item sought after by collectors.[3] A “manufactured” collectable is an item made specifically for people to collect.
I like this definition because it looks at those things that have attachment, sentimental value as well as those things that are created to capture memories in the minds of those who see an item and recall certain feelings. I wonder if some of our popular soft drinks will ever have collector value? Oh my, they already do.
Anyway, here is a really good article from Barbara Crews. She presents an assortment of definitions from different collection experts. Why are they experts? Ah, another good question.
So, tell me, what is your definition of a collector?
Rosie
There is a distinct difference between an antique and vintage item. Vintage is something old but does not have universal value like a 10 year old car. Antique is something older and has universal value like a model “T” car.
